Miss Collect is the umbrella foundation for cooperatives of South African women from poor townships. The name borrows the term “Miss” from the famous beauty contests, where it represents a woman with attractive qualities. The women of Miss Collect posses the outstanding characteristics of perseverance, independence and empowerment. They are mothers, wives and daughters who want to feed their family healthy food. They are also strong, courageous business women, taking steps toward a better future for their families and communities. Miss Collect supports these efforts by providing fresh oil at restaurants and households, in exchange for used cooking oil. In Soweto alone, this consists of 10 million liters of oil annually: a huge market.
